Bursitis


 

The bursa is a fluid filled sac that acts as a gliding surface for friction free movement between two structures within the body. The bursa can become irritated and painful. Irritation and/or inflammation of a bursal sac can be the result of strain, trauma, injury, repetitive overuse and/or infection.

Locations that bursitis is commonly seen include but are not limited to:

  • Shoulder
  • Hip
  • Knee
  • Elbow


Activities that can be the cause of or associated with bursitis include but are not limited to:

  • Baseball/Softball
  • Throwing/Pitching
  • Swimming
  • Tennis
  • Basketball
  • Dancing
  • Golfing
  • Lacrosse
  • Soccer
  • Repetitive use of arms/hands
  • Weight lifting
  • Running/Cross Country
  • Wrestling
  • Karate
