This is a cause of back pain that is the result of one vertebrae (back bone) slipping forward or backward on another. The problem with the back bones being out of alignment is that they can lessen the spaces is the center part of the spine (spinal canal) or the outside of the vertebrae (spinal foramen).

The lessening of space in the center or outside of the vertebrae can cause unwanted pressure or pinching on the spinal cord or spinal nerves. These nerves innervate (help allow function) to other body parts such as bone, muscle, soft tissue, arms and legs.

Spondylolisthesis can affect the following areas of the spine:

  • Cervical (Neck)
  • Thoracic (Mid Back)
  • Lumbar (Low Back) – most common

Activities that can lead to causing spondylolisthesis include but are not limited to the following:

  • Repetitive stress and strain on the spine (bending forward and/or twisting motions)
  • Trauma
  • Football
  • Lacrosse
  • Soccer
  • Dancing
  • Basketball
  • Baseball
  • Tennis
  • Weight Lifting
