Osteoarthritis

This diagnosis can affect any joint of the body where two bones meet. The cartilage between two joints acts as a cushion and assists with movement. Degeneration of the cartilage can occur through normal wear and tear and results in the cartilage thinning or wearing away.

Osteoarthritis can affect any joint in the body but is most commonly associated with weight bearing joints that include but are not limited to the following:

  • Cervical spine (neck)
  • Lumbar spine (low back)
  • Knees
  • Hips
  • Shoulders
  • Hands
  • Feet

There is a large amount of pain associated with osteoarthritis and most important prevention of further degeneration that can be addressed in physical therapy.

Activities that can cause or contribute to osteoarthritis include but are not limited to the following:

  • Running
  • Inappropriate weight lifting
  • Repetitive movement activities
  • Age associated degeneration
  • Increased weight on joints
  • Poor posture
