Women’s Health Q & A

What does a women’s health physical therapist do?

A women’s physical therapist has advanced training in the assessment and treatment of women’s health issues, including:

  • Bowel incontinence
  • Constipation
  • Pediatric pelvic health
  • Osteoporosis
  • Pelvic pain
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Pregnancy and postpartum
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction
  • Pre- and post-surgical care after Cesarean sections, hysterectomies, etc.

Dr. Patel and the women’s health team offer personalized and private exams and treatments in a comfortable environment so you can get the care you need to live pain-free and return to your normal activities.

What types of women’s health therapies are available?

The team develops a physical therapy plan to address your unique diagnosis and overall physical condition. Common types of therapies used at Apex Physical Therapy & Sports Rehabilitation include:

  • Dietary and behavioral education
  • Soft tissue release techniques for knots and scar tissue, and deep tissue massage
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Muscle-activation activities
  • Biofeedback
  • Electrical nerve stimulation and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
  • Hot and cold therapy
  • Home exercise programs
  • Vaginal dilator program

Dr. Patel and her team may utilize one or more of these therapies to address your concerns and help you get out of pain, improve your muscle function, and restore mobility to joints and tissues that are stiff, tense, or dysfunctional.

What should I expect during a women’s health physical therapy visit?

During your first visit, Dr. Patel and her team begin with an assessment of your condition and an exam to evaluate the surrounding muscles, soft tissues, and joints in the treatment area. For pelvic health exams, you’ll need to undress from the waist down in a private room before your therapist begins your exam. You’ll always be draped with a towel or sheet for modesty and your therapist communicates with you throughout the entire exam so you feel as comfortable as possible.

After your exam, your therapist discusses your diagnosis and treatment strategies. Your therapist may demonstrate exercises and stretches you can perform to improve your condition. Follow-up visits for pelvic issues may include internal soft tissue therapy, if appropriate.

At the end of your visit, Dr. Patel discusses lifestyle modifications or habits you can develop to address your concerns when you’re at home, work, or the gym.
