Back Pain Q & A

When should I see a doctor for back pain?

Many people suffer from some degree of back pain, ranging from shooting or stabbing pain to a constant, dull ache that may limit their ability to move.

Most cases of back pain improve with rest and home treatment, but you should see a doctor if you experience any of the following:

  • Back pain that doesn’t go away after two weeks
  • Severe back pain
  • Weakness, numbness, or tingling in the legs or arms
  • Pain that spreads down one or both legs or arms
  • Back pain that follows a fall

You should also seek medical help if you start experiencing back pain for the first time after age 50. Advancing age and certain diseases, such as cancer and osteoporosis, may cause your bones to become brittle and more susceptible to fractures or herniated discs.

What causes back pain?

Many different conditions can be at the root of your back pain. Common injuries and diseases associated with back pain include:

  • Spinal fracture
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Herniated disc
  • Bulging disc
  • Muscle or ligament sprains and strains
  • Spinal canal stenosis

Dr. Patel and her expert team are highly skilled at treating all types of back pain, from your neck (cervical spine) to low back (lumbar spine).

How does a physical therapist treat back pain?

First, Dr. Patel or a member of her team reviews your diagnosis, test results, and any information provided by your medical doctor. Then, they carefully evaluate your physical condition and develop an individualized treatment plan.

Treatment varies depending on the cause and severity of your back pain, but may include the following one-on-one physical therapy services:

  • The Graston Technique® or instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM)
  • Redcord® suspension treatment
  • Dry needling
  • The McKenzie Method® of physical therapy
  • The Mulligan Concept® manual therapy

The team at Apex Physical Therapy & Sports Rehabilitation takes a comprehensive approach to treatment. They work with you to promote overall health and wellness and teach you how to prevent future injuries in a comfortable environment.
