Diabetes Q&A

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects how your body processes the sugar (glucose) you get from your diet. In a healthy body, the hormone insulin converts sugar into the energy your cells need to function optimally.

When you have diabetes, this process doesn’t happen properly. The glucose stays in your bloodstream, building to levels high enough to cause other health complications.

There are different types of diabetes:

TYPE 2 DIABETES

TYPE 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the beta cells (the cells that produce insulin) in your pancreas are attacked and eventually destroyed. Without insulin, you cannot survive.

Type 1 Diabetes is managed by an endocrine team. Dr. Janel Jones, PT, DPT and Dr. Nima Patel, PT, DPT can work with your endocrinologist and endocrine team to develop a safe wellness or exercise program for you.

Type 1 diabetes cannot be reversed and Insulin will always be needed to live. Insulin can be dangerous with exercise and other activities. The team at Apex can assist you on the effects of exercise and the impacts it has on your body for safety.

TYPE 2 DIABETES

Type 2 diabetes has a strong correlation to your family health health history and it is associated with a poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle. With Type 2 diabetes, your body still has the ability to produce insulin, but it is greatly reduced. Insulin is often needed in the form of a pill or shot.

Proper diet and exercise can reverse the effects of Type 2 diabetes. As a result, you can prevent yourself or take away the need for insulin to lower your blood glucose (sugar) levels.

Unmanaged blood glucose levels lead to many chronic illnesses such as

  • Heart disease

  • Kidney disease

  • Glaucoma (blindness) and other eye problems

  • Neuropathy (nerve pain/poor nerve function)

  • Poor circulation

  • Poor healing ability

PREDIABETES
Prediabetes occurs when your average blood glucose is in the high range and you are at risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes. Diet and a sedentary lifestyle are primary causes for prediabetes.

The team at Apex can develop an individualized plan to help you reverse prediabetes.

How is diabetes treated?

Type 1 diabetes has different needs and risks associated with activity as compared to Type 2 Diabetes. Dr. Jones, PT, DPT and Dr. Patel, PT, DPT will develop a program to assist with your lifestyle needs and attain your health goals, such as competitive training, sports participation or an active hobby.

Type 2 diabetes is most effectively treated with a solid health plan. Lifestyle modification, diet changes and glucose monitoring are needed. The Apex practitioners will develop a plan based on your needs. They will guide you every step of the way through telehealth visits at your convenience.
